Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre

During the summer of 2018, 2019, and, 2020, I have worked as the Youth and Young Adult Community Coordinator at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre under my supervisor, Patti Noonan. My role then expanded into marketing and events for the organziation. Throughout the summers, my job included planning various events and activities for children in the community such as Canada Day in the park, our annual kid’s bike rodeo, scavenger hunts, and community movie nights. Through these events, I have closely interacted with children ages ranging from 5 to 15 and group sizes varying from 15 to over 50 children. As a summer student, my responsibilities include the planning and preparation for the events, as well as working directly with the children at each event. This job required a great deal of organizational and preparation skills. This was very beneficial experience for me making sure all of the children had engaging activities to do while making sure they were safe. As a teacher candidate, I feel that this job helped prepare me a lot in terms of responsibility and organization as well as coming up with engaging activities and events for children.

While working with the ASCOCAV, I was also partially responsible for planning our Music in the Park series. I communicated with bands, booked vendors, and did introductions at each show. This was valuable experience for me to practice public speaking skills and also required strong organization skills.

This video shows an example of one of the outdoor movie nights I planned for the community. This particular night was geared towards young adults. I felt a passion in this position to create things for teens to do in the evenings. The turn out was great and we were able to host several movie nights throughout each summer giving students a safe place to gather with their friends.
